課程概述 |
Forest Asset Management is a senior level course devoted to cover the management of forest as an asset primarily for timber production. Both the management of a single stand and that of many stands will be examined. It will focus on the following topics
(1) Arithmetic of compounding and discounting
(2) Principle of marginal analysis
(3) Management of a single stand
A. Even-aged management
a. Determination of rotation age
b. Determination of planting density and rotation age
c. Effect of rotation age on wildlife
B. Uneven-aged management
a. Determination of growing stock and cutting cycle
b. Comparison between even-aged and uneven-aged management
c. Impact of even-aged and uneven-aged management on soil, wildlife, and fishery resources
C: Management of an existing stand
a. Determination of final harvest age of an existing stand
b. Determination of the thinning intensity and the number of years till final harvest
(4) Forest taxation and timber management
(5) Management of many stands: harvest scheduling
(6) A case study of 50 years of management experience at the Harvard Forest
(7) Reforestation management

The objective of the course is to help student master the skill in
1. Compounding and discounting
2. The application of marginal analysis in input and output decision making.
3. The determination of the optimal rotation age, planting density in even-aged management, and optimal cutting cycle and residual growing stock level in uneven-aged management
4. The determination of optimal thinning intensity and interval
5. Harvest scheduling
6. Managing a reforestation project.
